Life Is But A Dream
This past Saturday I finally got around to watching the movie Inception.
Sunday, I had dinner with an old friend, his old high school guy friend, and the guy's girlfriend.
In a room with three guys the girl said something with which I could not argue at the time.
She said that she as a girl could not identify with the movie Inception since it seemed to be mostly a movie geared towards guys.
Sure the movie has a bit of a "love story" but in the end the relationship seems to be presented from a guys point of view.
Other themes in the movie are about coming to terms with your father's expectations, becoming your own man, and also about becoming a better father.
Probably the most important theme of all is that of making your way Home.
The film does have some great special effects, lots of kick ass action, and it moves rather fast. That being said there were a few moments where I thought they dumbed down the dialogue, but I guess they had to since there are many layers and they probably didn't want to lose the audience.
Overall I give it 4 1/2 stars out of 5.
There is a great deal of discussion on whether the whole movie was a dream or not... at first I thought it was all a dream just like when Dorothy goes and comes back from OZ; However, after much consideration I've decided to not place importance on whether it was all a dream or not because to me the subtext speaks for itself.
The journey HOME, waking up from a life that seems like a nightmare, takes planning and a great deal of effort, and in the end you don't care if you are awake or dreaming because you made it HOME- to the ones you love... and that makes life seem like a dream.
Many of us will stress ourselves like crazy, to the point we feel like we are in limbo in a place we cannot escape - we cannot return to a place where we are happy - HOME. That's where the main character played by Leonardo Dicaprio is at the beginning of the movie. The film Inception will play tricks on your mind but if you pay close attention it will show you the way home... Hollywood style.
Now that I think about it, that's something we can all relate to whether we are a guy or a girl... or anyone in-between.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream.
